Who Are Life Flight Helicopter Services For?

Air ambulances help us quickly access patients in difficult-to-reach locations. They are also for people in critical condition whose lives depend on prompt care.

We commonly use the Life Flight helicopter for:

  • Critically ill or injured patients who are hospitalized but need to be transferred to another facility
  • Injuries sustained in challenging terrain, such as on a mountain or in the forest
  • Sick and injured people in rural areas
  • Transportation of a donor organ for transplant surgery 
  • Victims of bad traffic accidents and natural disasters

Rapid Transport From Life Flight Air Ambulance Services

In 1982, Life Flight became New England's first dedicated air ambulance program. We connect nearly 900 critically ill and injured patients with much-needed care every year. Our service area stretches from New Hampshire to Connecticut and Boston to Albany, NY.

Critical Care Transport by Life Flight Helicopter

Our air ambulance is a helicopter specifically designed to transport critically ill patients. It features heart monitors, intravenous pumps for delivering medications, defibrillators to restore a steady heart rhythm and more. The Life Flight helicopter can travel up to 140 miles an hour, helping you get to a hospital as quickly and safely as possible.

Pre-Hospital Care

A specially trained team provides medical services during your transport. Highly skilled flight nurses and critical care paramedics deliver therapies and provide attentive monitoring. They work under the direction of an emergency medicine doctor specializing in air medicine who is available at any time to provide additional guidance.

Life Flight pilots have significant experience and special air ambulance training. Our pilots are among the most skilled in the industry. Many completed their training with Air Methods Corporation, the nation’s leader in air medical transport. Their expertise ensures a high degree of safety for patients and flight crews.

UMass Memorial is a founding member of the North East Air Alliance (NEAA). This group of regional air medical service professionals collaborates to establish and share best practices in transport medicine. These efforts help patients and flight crews throughout the region maintain the highest level of safety and care excellence for critically ill patients.

Life Flight is accredited by the Board of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS). This designation recognizes our commitment to medical transport excellence. Our flight crew adheres to strict standards for safety, quality and employee education.

If you or a loved one experiences a life-threatening issue, call 911 or go to the emergency department immediately. For mental health emergencies, call 988. For less serious issues, contact your primary care provider at 855-UMASS-MD during business hours. Services are also available in urgent care clinics, some of which are open evenings and weekends.
