You may be wondering, “What is a hospitalist?” A hospitalist is a medical doctor — usually specializing in internal medicine or family medicine — who focuses exclusively on your care while you’re in the hospital. They manage your treatment and answer any questions you or your loved ones have.

At UMass Memorial Health, your hospitalist also works closely with your primary care provider (PCP) while you’re in the hospital, keeping them informed of your progress. After you leave the hospital, you return to your PCP’s care.

• Access to top-notch, comprehensive services: Your hospitalist collaborates with other specialists if needed, working with them to develop the treatment plan that’s right for you.
• Comfortable, convenient experience: They prescribe the medications you need during your stay and after you go home, so it’s one less task for you to worry about.
  Safe discharge: When the time is right, your hospitalist works with you and your loved ones to plan a safe and smooth discharge.
