Food Is Medicine

Food insecurity is defined as reduced quality, variety and desirability of diet, disrupted eating patterns, and reduced food intake. It is a leading cause of malnutrition. In Worcester County alone, over 70,000 people are experiencing food insecurity, nearly 10% of the total population.

With the help of donor support UMass Memorial Health was able to launch the Food Is Medicine Program in October 2022 to promote food justice and address food insecurity among families in Central Massachusetts. Pilot programs were launched at three hospital locations including at the Children’s Medical Center.  Thanks to continuing support, plans are underway to expand the programs to specific cadres of patients and to children with Sickle Cell Disease and Diabetes who can benefit greatly by improved nutrition.
