SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. — June 5, 2014 — Cancer survivors plus physicians, nurses, staff and executives at Harrington HealthCare System turned out on June 4 for The Cancer Center at Harringtons fourth annual National Cancer Survivors Day celebration.
The Cancer Center at Harrington, which opened its doors in 2009, has filled an important need in the community, State Senate President Pro Tem Richard T. Moore told those who gathered in a large tent outside the facility.
“I hear so many times from so many people how important The Cancer Center for Harrington is for this region,” State Senator Moore told the crowd. “If you are being treated for cancer, one of the last things you want to do is travel a long distance to receive care. Here at The Cancer Center at Harrington, you have all the latest technology, and a highly trained and very friendly staff. You are a great help to this community.”
Harrington HealthCare System President and CEO Edward H. Moore in turn thanked the senator for the work he has done to promote healthcare in the region, including his role in helping secure funding to rebuild the Emergency Department at another Harrington HealthCare System facility in Webster.
“Our Emergency Department reconstruction at Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard, in Webster, is proceeding only because of Senator Moores help with state funding for a portion of our project,” Edward H. Moore said.
Senator Moore led the effort to include the $1.5 million in the 2014 Commonwealth of Massachusetts budget to help fund Harringtons $8.8 million Emergency Department reconstruction project.
The theme of this years National Cancer Survivors Day at Harrington was “The Magic of Survival.” Speakers included Harrington President and CEO Moore; Cancer Center Medical Director Christopher Seidler, M.D.; Timothy Shafman, M.D., the National Medical Director for 21st Century Radiation Therapy Services, Harringtons joint venture partner in The Cancer Center; and inspirational speaker Kris Biagotti, who runs marathons with her special needs daughter Kayla. The Master of Ceremonies was Auxiliary President Betsy Peppel.
