The 16 members that make up the Board of Directors for Harrington includes medical professionals, community leaders, business entrepreneurs and advocates for many local agencies. They are selected based on their experience and expertise.
Our Board volunteers countless hours to promote and support the mission, strategy and management for all of Harrington HealthCare System.

Michael serves on the Finance Committee and is the current Chair of the Investment Committee. He is a resident of Spencer. He retired following a 34-year career at FLEXcon Company in Spencer with his last 19 years serving as COO. He is currently an Executive Director of the Board of Cornerstone Bank. Engel is a graduate of Assumption College and the School of Industrial management at WPI.
Deb, a resident of Sturbridge, has served on the Compliance, Personnel Policy and Nominating Committees and is newly appointed to the Board of Directors. She serves as the Associate Superintendent of Business and Finance for the Tantasqua and Union 61 School Districts. Prior to Tantasqua, Boyd worked for United Healthcare and holds an MBA from Anna Maria College.
As President of UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Ed Moore is responsible for the overall operation and expansion of the Hospital and UMass Memorial Health – Harrington System. He has been with Harrington for over eight years, assuming his leadership role in 2007. Moore received an MBA in Hospital Administration from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Management, cum laude, from the State University of New York at Binghamton.
Sergio L. Melgar, age 63, was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) of the Parent in January of 2014. For the past 29 years, Mr. Melgar has been working with health care and academic institutions. Prior to his appointment in 2014, he participated in the acquisition and subsequent integration of the health care network of Catholic University in Chile into CHRISTUS Health, a U.S. Catholic health care system serving as CFO of International Operations. For eight years, he served as the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and CFO at the University of Kentucky overseeing all financial aspects of the clinical operations of the university hospitals and medical group, its commercial health insurance company, and its health colleges. For 10 years prior to relocating to Kentucky in 2004, Mr. Melgar served as the CFO of UCLA Health, the clinical and medical teaching arm of the University of California Los Angeles. Between 1981 and 1987, he served at Arthur Andersen & Co. and between 1987 and 1992 he served at Ernst and Young. Mr. Melgar received his B.A. in Economics from the University of California Los Ang
Randy, C.P.A., M.B.A., a resident of Webster, MA, serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors and is a member of the Executive Committee as well as the Finance Committee and Investment Committee. Becker was Chief Financial Officer, Senior Vice President and Director of MAPFRE U.S.A. Corp until he retired in 2016. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Webster Board of Selectmen. He also serves on the Board of the Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts and Nichols College, Dudley, MA where he earned both his Bachelor’s degree and Masters in Business Administration degree.
Kathleen resides in Sturbridge. She has been a Registered Nurse since 1987. She has spent most of her career working in the fields of pediatric, obstetric and emergency medicine, and was past Director of Nursing for The Bridge of Central Massachusetts. She was also the Director of Health Services for the Thompson, CT public schools and a Massachusetts Central Regional School Nurse Consultant. Kathleen also serves on the Board of Directors of Venture Community Services in Sturbridge. She is a graduate of Elms College and Cambridge College and holds both a Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Arts in Education and currently works at Tantasqua Junior High School in Fiskdale.
(Jay) Detarando, a resident of Webster, Mass., is Executive Vice President and Treasurer at Incom Inc., a technology company in Charlton, Mass. He has been serving on the Harrington Board for nine years. He currently serves on the Executive Committee as well as the Quality/Patient Safety Committee, the Building and Grounds Committee, the Community &Government Relations Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Personnel Policy Committee.
Jose Dingui, a resident of Southbridge, Mass., has been serving on the Board for three years. He has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Curry College and a Masters in Criminal Justice from Westfield State College. He is Deputy Chief of the Southbridge Police Department and has been an integral part of the Southbridge Cops N Kids Program for 18 years. Dingui currently serves on the Nominating Committee Interim.
John, a resident of Woodstock, Conn., sits on several committees for Harrington in addition to its Board of Directors, including the Audit Committee, Investment Committee and Finance Committee; he is also the Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. He is self–employed at both McGlone Realty and Mr. Mike’s Commercial and Residential Projects. He attended Quinsigamond College and Worcester State University. He has taken online courses from Harvard University in Public Economics and Yale University in Financial Markets. McGlone also sits on the Board of Directors and Audit Committee for Southbridge Savings Bank, the Investments and Long Range Planning Committees for Muddy Brook Fire Department and is an Advisory Board member of ASPIRA of Massachusetts.
Gina Plata-Nino is a local attorney at the Central West Justice Center in Worcester, working on both the state and federal levels on policy matters affecting low-income families, elders and persons with disabilities. Plato-Nino is the Co-founder and President of the Oon-Jai Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in Southeast Asia by promoting practical, sustainable, healthy living.
Mark, a resident of Webster, serves on the Executive Committee as well as the following committees: Audit, Physician Compensation, Building and Grounds, Nominating, Investment and Finance. Mark is a partner and financial consultant with CCR Wealth Management, LLC in Westborough. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and is a member of the Massachusetts Hospital Association.
Dr. (Frank) Powers, a resident of Uxbridge, Mass., serves on the Board as the President of the Medical Staff of Harrington. He also serves on the Quality/Patient Safety Committee. He has been a member of Harrington’s governing body for one year. He received his medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine, held an internship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and did his residency at Miriam Hospital/Brown University. Powers is the Director of Harrington’s Hospitalist Program and practices in Harrington’s Hospitalist Medicine Department in Southbridge.
Sarai Rivera, MSW, is a Worcester City Councilor who is is serving a sixth two-year term as District Four Councilor working professionally within the Worcester community in the field of human services and mental health. She is also the Behavioral Health Director of Renaissance Medical Group located in Southbridge. Her extensive experience in the areas of community mental health and interventions for multicultural populations in urban settings has allowed her to dedicate her life’s work to issues of social justice.
Dr. Natalie Stanley is a resident of Northbridge, Mass., and was born and raised in Southbridge, Mass. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DMD) from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2013. Upon graduation, Dr. Stanley returned to her hometown to work as an associate in the dental practice formerly known as Drs. DiMatteo and Rotty, which she then purchased and became the sole owner in 2016. In 2022, she built her dream practice and moved the practice location to Sturbridge, Mass. Dr Stanley is a member of the Worcester District Dental Society, Massachusetts Dental Society, and the American Dental Association. Dr. Stanley also volunteers her time to sit on the advisory committee for the dental assisting program at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School, and she serves as the chairperson for the dental assisting program at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School.
Jim has been serving on the Board for 10 years and was previously Chairperson of the Board. He serves on the Executive Committee as well as the Building and Grounds Committee, the Bylaws Committee, the Physician Compensation Committee, the Community & Government Relations Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Personnel Policy Committee. He is a resident of Sturbridge, Mass., and was previously Vice President of the United Lens Company. Waddick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Nichols College.
