SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass., June 29, 2009 – Radiation Therapy Services at the Central Massachusetts Cancer Center has treated its first patient at the state-of-the-art facility on the Harrington Hospital campus.
The patient was treated June 25 at the center, which is located at 55 Sayles Street on the Harrington campus.
The center is the first facility of its kind between Springfield and Worcester. The center features the latest technologies and treatments, such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), which focuses the radiation treatment on the tumor and helps spare normal tissue.
The center is a joint venture between Harrington Hospital and 21st Century Oncology, Inc. The entire facility is called the Central Massachusetts Cancer Center. The first floor, which offers radiation and other treatments, is operated by Radiation Therapy Services and is called Radiation Therapy Services at the Central Massachusetts Cancer Center. The second floor, called The Cancer Center at Harrington and operated by Harrington Hospital, will open later in the year and offer infusion services, counseling, and other oncology services including breast reconstruction surgery. Patients who are diagnosed with cancer may be referred for consultation with the Radiation Oncologist, Dr. T.J. Fitzgerald.
