Kathy Vairo Heading Fund Raising Efforts For Cancer Center at Harrington Hospital

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. – March 6, 2009 – Kathy Vairo, a member of the Harrington Hospital Auxiliary and a Corporator of the hospital, has been appointed head of the Auxiliarys fund raising efforts for the Cancer Center at Harrington, a freestanding $14 million cancer treatment center the hospital is constructing on its campus with joint-venture partner 21st Century Oncology, Inc.

The Auxiliary is taking the central role in Harringtons fund-raising efforts through a series of events throughout the Harrington service area, culminating in a 700-person benefit June 20 at the Sturbridge Host and Conference Center. Entitled “Evening Under the Stars,” the event will include dinner and dancing, and will highlight the many community groups and individuals who have contributed to the center, both through financial donations and through the organization of fund-raising events. The Auxiliary intends to raise $76,000 through “Evening Under the Stars,” $1,000 for every year of its existence, from 1932 through 2008. Tickets are $40 per person; a table of 10 is $400. For more information, call 508-765-9771 ext. 2745.

Fund raising planning for these events began under Vairos direction in the fall of 2008 when ground was broken for the Cancer Center, which is scheduled to be in operation by late June.

Vairo, an Auxiliary member since 1994, has a long, successful history of fund raising for a number of organizations. At Tabor Academy in Marion, she and her husband Ron served on the Parent Fund Committee for the 1998 academic year and they were appointed chairs of the Parent Fund 1999-2002. Vairo is the founder of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Sturbridge Walk/Run for the Cure and she co-chaired the event from 1990 through 1993. Vairo also has been involved in several fund raising efforts at the Bancroft School in Worcester, and from 2000 to 2003 she was President of the Parent Faculty Association as well as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Trustee Development Subcommittee.

She gained further fund-raising experience at Old Sturbridge Village in corporate development and as a regional manager at the American Diabetes Association. She and her husband Ron live in Southbridge and are the parents of two daughters, Gina and Julie. Ron Vairo is a member of the Board of Trustees of Harrington Hospital.
